This year, for the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on May 17th, we reflect on what lies at the heart of Democracy.

The theme of IDAHOBIT 2025 highlighted the power of communities. In 2026, the CGU LGBTI Committee builds on this message: strong, inclusive democracies are the foundation that allow our societies to thrive. Democracy cannot function without the full protection of universal human rights for all - without exception. Across the globe, far‑right forces are targeting multiple oppressed communities, using so‑called “LGBTI ideology” to mobilise fear, distract from social and economic injustice, and undermine inclusive public institutions. Anti-LGBTI rhetoric is central to their strategy to weaponize fear and stigma against sexual and gender minorities and weaken democratic norms. These attacks are also an attack on democracy itself, It is no coincidence that attacks against the LGBTI community have intensified as democratic spaces shrink.

Trade unions play a vital role at the heart of democracy

Trade unions built on solidarity and democratic participation play a vital role in protecting the rights of workers who face discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics. By promoting inclusivity, organising collectively and engaging in advocacy, unions not only safeguard vulnerable workers but also reinforce democratic values, resist authoritarianism and counter attempts by reactionary forces to marginalize or scapegoat minority groups.

The rights of LGBTI+ workers and the safety of our communities more broadly depend on democratic institutions that uphold equality, protect freedoms of expression, association and assembly, and safeguard participation in public life.

It is essential that workplaces are established as safe environments, free from all forms of violence, discrimination, and harassment. In this regard, the trade union movement has the responsibility not only to advance inclusive policies, but also to firmly and consistently denounce the various forms of oppression, persecution, and criminalization faced by LGBTI+ people. The unwavering defense of human rights must be a cross-cutting pillar of trade union action, making strategic use of collective bargaining to incorporate specific clauses that guarantee decent working conditions, safe environments, and the effective recognition of rights, thereby contributing to the strengthening of workplaces that are truly inclusive, equitable, and respectful.

A collective struggle for justice and equality

Our experiences of multiple forms of discrimination and oppression remind us that the fight for LGBTI+ rights is inseparable from the wider struggle for democracy, equality and justice for

 everyone.

At this critical moment, we must continue to raise our voices, stand in solidarity and  resist reactionary governments that seek to divide us. Working collectively for the common good while celebrating the diversity that strengthens us remains essential.

We need to act now to secure the solid foundations of a more democratic and better future for everyone.

The CGU LGBTI Committee remains dedicated to building more inclusive workplaces worldwide and committed to fighting for the rights of LGBTI workers everywhere. For IDAHOBIT 2026, we celebrate the continued efforts of global unions to stand in solidarity with LGBTI workers and to protect democracy for ALL workers
